Building the visual backbone of

Five Weeks to Build Southern France (in Germany)

In 2023 I worked my ass off turning rural eastern Germany into sun‑drenched “Southern France”, juggling modular “concrete” walls, mediterranean roofs and the construction team I was responsible for.

It was exhausting, slightly ridiculous in the best way and one of the most fun challenges I’ve ever had.

These are only two examples of how we transformed rural Germany ..

.. into a convincing version of Southern France.

responsibilities

  • turned the production designers concepts and drawings into buildable sets
  • tested construction options, refined proportions and selected materials
  • co-designed several 1930s sets for England, France and Spain
  • coordinated the construction team on site during the build

My contribution & design decisions

  • co-invented a modular chipboard ‘concrete wall’ system that could be quickly assembled and reconfigured on location
  • created convincing Mediterranean-style roof tiles from repurposed PVC pipes to stay on budget and on schedule
  • kept construction on track for each shoot by meeting every deadline in demanding on-set conditions

reflection

This project showed me I can think like both a designer and a builder under real constraints. I turned concepts into believable sets despite limited budget, tight timings, awkward locations and last‑minute changes. Co‑inventing construction solutions and coordinating the team taught me to prototype quickly, communicate clearly and keep the work on track. It confirmed that I thrive where spatial storytelling, hands‑on making and problem‑solving meet and gave me a clearer sense of how I want to grow as a designer.
