Tactical urbanism in wartime Kyiv

In spring 2025, I spent five weeks volunteering with D.I.Y. Kyiv on a two-year tactical urbanism intervention at Kontraktova Square and an urban garden.

Working with architects and urbanists, I turned concepts into buildable structures despite material shortages and the unpredictability of a city at war.

Kontraktova Square: a two-year tactical intervention

D.I.Y. Kyiv re-imagined one of the citys most historic squares as a flexible, people-first public space.

my contributions ..

  • co-designed and built modular seating and play elements
  • prototyped, tested and refined scaffolding-based installations, including swings, seating zones and planters
  • coordinated up to 8 local and international volunteers

Urban garden: activating a wasteland

Just a few steps away we transformed a wasteland into a small urban garden using low‑cost, modular timber structures assembled by volunteers.

my contributions ..

  • designed and built an easy-to-modify modular wall shelf system that gives new life to the existing concrete wall and enriches the garden’s overall atmosphere
  • built a table and benches from recycled beams, aiming for entirely screw‑free timber joinery and coming close, with only a few hidden fixings needed in the final build
  • built planter boxes and a tool shed

Tactical benches: reclaiming sidewalks from cars

In Kyiv, widespread sidewalk parking leaves little safe space for pedestrians.

I designed and prototyped two tactical benches that can be quickly dropped into these contested spots but are difficult to remove, reclaiming the sidewalks for people.

Reflection

this project deepened my understanding of traumasensitive design and how public spaces can be shaped around the everyday needs of a neighborhood. working with grassroots initiatives and regular residents showed me how small, collective actions can positively transform public space. tactical urbanism became an inspiring test lab, where quick, lowcost interventions helped reveal local needs, usage patterns and opportunities for longerterm change.
